This document serves to explain the official procedures which will be followed by Infinite Aviation, and serves as a guideline for risk mitigation measures which have been implemented by the flight schools where classroom-based ground schools are presented. This is in compliance with the South African Department of Health Guidelines for COVID-19.
The purpose of the COVID-19 Workplace plan is to facilitate the effective and correct application of the Health and Safety Act 181 of 1993. This is to ensure that all who are employed remain safe and healthy during the period of the pandemic in accordance with the guidelines implemented by the South African government. As changes are implemented, documents and policies will be amended. Employees will be notified of these changes via email.
The scope of this policy applies to facilities and those whom the instructor will interact with in the provision of services for Infinite Aviation, namely:
- Blue Chip Flight School ATO 0056
- CDC Training ATO 0006
- Central Flying Academy ATO 0105
- Infinite Aviation office (4 Valbonne Suites, Valbonne Drive, Lonehill, Johanneburg)
Infinite Aviation will be responsible for the implementation and upholding of the guidelines as they are presented in this document.
- Return to work
During the period of lockdown, which came into effect at midnight on 26 March 2020, Infinite Aviation has continued to work on an online platform. All classroom teaching ceased. Classes have been conducted, with approval from the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA), in association with Blue Chip Flight School (ATO 0056).
Contact, classroom-based teaching will only commence once it is considered safe to do so. This decision will be made after consultation with the flight schools at which services are rendered. Once both Infinite Aviation (the service provider) and the flight school (the service recipient) are satisfied that all necessary precautions are in place and it is safe, classroom based training will commence. At all times, students, service providers and flight schools will ensure the COVID-19 precautions remain in place. This will include social distancing, the wearing of a cloth mask, and the use of sanitiser by all relevant parties.
Classes will continue to be conducted online as the levels of lockdown restrictions are eased. Instructors will return to work in a classroom only once it has been determined that it is safe to do so and after consultation with the flight school. Instructors are permitted to decline to return to work in a classroom should they feel that it is not safe for them to do so.
Office hours will continue to run from 08:00 – 17:00 from Monday to Friday, and remote working will continue. The office (4 Valbonne Suites, Lonehill, Johannesburg) will have limited use and access. Tuition will continue to be conducted online, until otherwise stipulated. Decisions in this regard will be made by management and discussed with the instructors prior to commencement.
- COVID – 19 Ready workplace
In accordance with the COVID-19 workplace guidelines, all reasonable measures will be taken to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations are observed.
An appropriate risk analysis has been conducted by Infinite Aviation management prior to commencement of work in a contact based environment. Where possible, all lessons will remain on an online platform, to limit in-person interaction.
Prior to the commencement of work at any of the flight schools where services are rendered in a classroom or tuition at the office, employees will need to:
- Complete the employee travel history and health disclosure document (Annexure A)
- Be provided with PPE (alcohol-based hand sanitiser with an alcohol content of at least 70%, surface sanitiser, mask / face shield)
- Undergo the necessary COVID-19 training — proper sanitising, wearing of masks, social distancing and necessary precautionary measures
Employees will be made aware of the precautions which have been implemented at the flight schools where they will report for work. Infinite Aviation will ensure that their employees understand these measures and that these measures are accordingly are complied with. Safety Management documents from the respective schools (Blue Chip Flight School ATO 0056, CDC Training ATO 0006 and Central Flying Academy ATO 0105) will be made available to the instructors.
- Screening & Precautions
Employees who are reporting for duty in person at a flight school will be subject to the screening process implemented by the flight school. Prior to departure for the flight school, the presentation of tuition in person at the office or the attendance of a meeting in person at the office, the employee needs to conduct a self-screening, noting if they have any of the following symptoms:
- Sore throat
- Shortness of breath / difficulty in breathing
If the employee suspects that they have COVID-19 or have come into contact with someone who has the virus, they will need to immediately notify Infinite Aviation management (email: firstname.lastname@example.org,phone 061 097 7088). From this point all necessary protocols will be implemented (notification of flight schools, contact tracing, notification to the Department of Health 0800 02 9999, and the Department of Employment and Labour).
The employee will need to enter self-isolation for a period of 14 days. The employee may return to work after this 14 day period once they are no longer contagious / infected.
- Risks and Hazard Assessment
Infinite Aviation management has been in contact with the management of the flight schools to which services are rendered in order to ascertain their level of readiness to return to work. Safety management documents have been requested from each of the flight schools. On the basis of these documents, in which precautions and safety measurements are explained, a decision to return to in classroom training will be made. This decision will be made once both Infinite Aviation and the flight school are satisfied that all precautions can be implemented effectively.
Infinite Aviation has limited access to the office. Students are permitted only to enter the office to collect stationery items (books, rulers, protractors, CX3 etc). Until further notice, tuition will be conducted online.
All surfaces in the office are cleaned in accordance with COVID-19 guidelines. At all times those present in the office will maintain social distancing (minimum 1.5m apart), avoid hand shaking and physical contact, and wear masks at all times when more than one person is present in the office.
Employees are not permitted to share stationery with anyone. Employees, once teaching in a classroom, will be requested to:
- List symptoms checklist at the commencement of class
- Maintain social distancing
- Wear masks / face coverings at all times
- Avoid sharing of stationery / equipment
- Sneeze / cough into a folded elbow, or tissue which is then immediately disposed of correctly.
- Sanitise hands frequently and upon entering the classroom after breaks during lessons.
- Remind students that instructors reserve the right to ask anyone who presents with symptoms which may indicate COVID-19 to please leave the classroom, and to notify the flight school and Infinite Aviation immediately once this action has taken place.
